About the Ecovillage Atlas

This atlas asks one question of every country on Earth: if you wanted to found a new international ecovillage or universal township — in the spirit of Auroville — where would it have the best chance of thriving for generations?

Each country is scored 0–100 on 24 criteria grouped in five pillars. Your ⚖️ priorities set how much each one counts, and must-haves knock out countries that fail a hard requirement. On top sit candidate sites — specific valleys, highlands and coasts scouted for climate, water, soil, land prices and access — and existing ecovillages for precedent.

What this atlas can't tell you

• Regions differ. Scores are national; land law, climate, safety and prices vary hugely inside big countries (Brazil, India, the USA). The site pins carry the regional detail.
• Law changes. Land, NGO and visa rules move fast. Check every point with a local lawyer before you commit money.
• Local relationships. Indigenous and customary land rights, neighbouring villages and local politics shape a project more than any index — Auroville's own history shows it.
• Land title quality, nonprofit tax treatment, banking for foreign-funded NGOs and succession of community land are worth checking country by country.

Indices are calibrated to the public sources listed; legal, visa, land-price and community scores combine verified sources with expert estimates (marked "estimate" in profiles). This is an opinionated research atlas and a conversation starter, not legal advice. Corrections are warmly welcome.
