CEDAR — the Centre for Ecovillage Development and Research — maps the world's intentional communities and ecovillages on a living globe, so the movement can see itself whole.
Each point is a real community. Click it for when it was founded, how many people live there, how international it is, its awards and recognitions, and a link to explore it directly.
The world ranking scores every community from four ingredients of success: size (current residents), longevity (years going), global reach (documented nationalities) and recognition (UN, UNESCO, Right Livelihood, World Habitat, GEN and other honours). Re-sort the panel by any single measure with the buttons at the top.
The timeline at the bottom reveals communities by founding year — press ▶ to watch the movement grow. From the ☰ menu you can switch to a flat world map, draw lineage links between communities that seeded one another, or open State of the movement for the totals.
Figures are best-available estimates drawn from Wikipedia, official community sites, the Global Ecovillage Network and the Foundation for Intentional Community. Populations marked at the movement level (e.g. the Hutterites, Bruderhof, EcoYoff) count the whole network, not one site — noted in the description. Corrections are warmly welcome.
